Water Safety - Term 4

We are surrounded by water and with our weather warming up and holidays just around the corner it is really important to have the skills to be safe in water eg. ocean, rivers, lakes, pools etc.

50th Jubilee Celebrations

Some of room 19 students were involved in our 50th Jubilee Celebrations today.  Great work Nadia and Rosie for raising the flag with the help of Mrs Pauline Mundie our previous Principal.

Nadia read our this amazing poem that was written by her, Sukie and Chloe.  Kaea shared his thoughts at the end of the day alongside other guests from different decades.  It was pretty special to listen to someone going to Elm Park School now and what our wonderful school means to them.

Flax Weaving with Nany Rae

Today we had a special guest visit us and share her knowledge and skills on flax weaving.

Sienna's Mum and Nany Rae helped us cut the flax correctly and then we weaved the flax into stunning flowers.  We will be writing some instructions on making flax flowers so watch out for these on our blogs.

Have Your Say on Election Day

For the past couple of weeks we have been learning at the importance of "Having You Say" and voting when it comes to Election Day.

We have been focusing on the importance of being involved in decision making and discussed different decisions that some of our room 19 children have been involved in eg. which intermediate they go to, whether they continue to do certain after school activities etc.

We talked about the important of having a voice and about rights and responsibilities (rules and laws).  We had some awesome discussions about who decides when we go to school, leave school, when we can vote, when we can drive or even when we can get married (that was fun ....)

Today it was our turn to vote and we used the Pakuranga Electorate voting forms.  It was fun using the orange pens choosing a party and candidate to vote for.  We even had our own voting box ...

Now we will be super prepared and ready to vote when we are old enough.

Parachute Madness with Youthtown

We focused on 4 different values this morning with Youthtown - can you remember what they were ... Hint - generosity, mastering, ....

We used different parachute activities to practise and demonstrate these values.  Can you see where we might have shown these values?

Warriors were in town ...

These guys Keanu Laumatia-Paki & Ata Hingano from the Warriors came and visited our whole school this afternoon. They had some really cool messages to get across to all the kids at Elm Park.

1. The importance of getting lots of sleep
2. Keep hydrated and drinking lots of water to keep our brains healthy
3. The feeling of belonging eg. sports teams, swimming groups, dancing groups, Elm Park, your family.

It was really really really noisy but we learnt lots and some of us received prizes ... Go the Warriors !!!!!

A visit from the Warriors would  not be complete without some physical exercise ...

Go Kaea .... awesome reading !!!!

All lined up for signatures !!!!

Hot Dogs & Coleslaw

Our edible garden has been producing some amazing vegetables.  We recently harvested two cabbages and Sienna, Reuben, Ella and Nicolaas made tasty coleslaw for our class (recipe to follow in our Room 19 Cook Book - watch this space).

What better way to eat coleslaw than with a juicy hot dog with lashings of tomato sauce and mustard.  Congratulations to those children that "had a go" and ate coleslaw for the first time - Resilience !!!!

Ghost - Usain Bolt

In the story Ghost we did lots of research on Usain Bolt and created an awesome collage of him on the running track in our sunflower groups.

Our sunflowers groups answer different questions each week and post our answers on Twitter each week.  We have loved reading the different responses from each school.

Here is the link to our twitter page to see what we have been posting about Ghost.

Wahooooooo Youthtown is back in town !!!!!

We love Youthtown and this term they continue to focus on developing sportmanship, working together as a team and having FUN ...

The weather has been really really unkind to us so we have had to spend most of our sessions inside the school hall but that hasn't stopped us from having some very competitive games of dodge ball.

Guess what we have tried .....

Thanks Coco for buying the sunflower seeds in the kernel.    They are extra tasty but there is definitely an art to breaking into the kernel and getting the seed out.

Were you one of the talented ones to open the seed in your mouth :)

Can you remember in the story where  Ghost would go to buy his sunflower seeds and how he started the habit of eating sunflower seeds ????

Ghost by Jason Reynolds

This term we are super excited to be part of Chapter Chat.  It is like an on-line book club for year 5 and 6 students.  We started listening to the book this week and today we thought it would be fun to eat some sunflower seeds like the character Castle Cranshaw (Ghost).

Most of us thought they were quite tasty but they didn't have any shells around them like in the story.  Maybe we will have to buy the sunflower seeds in the shells ....
