Welcome to our Korean Students

Over the next few weeks we will be sharing our class with four students from Korea - Hyung Seo, Soo Yin, Che rin and Ju hee.  We are looking forward to learning and Korea and making new friends.

We introduced the students with a Powhiri and we are really proud of Caitlin and Shaniqua who performed the karanga (call) for the manuhiri (visitors) and the tangatawhenua (Elm Park).

Term 3 - What's Happening and a Few Reminders

Thanks so much to all those fantastic parents that came along last Thursday to our Student-Led Conferences.  It was great to our room 19 learners enthusiastically sharing their learning.

We have a HUGE group of children in room 19 that each week take "Responsibility" for completing their home learning expectations eg. mathletics (at least 1000 points), reading eggs (at least 3 lessons achieved) and spelling (different spelling strategies).  However, there is a small group that need some support to complete this eg. consistently returning home learning books on a Friday and completing "all" the expectations.  Our home learning expectations are very small and are a consolidation of what we are learning in the classroom.    Room 19 if you think you might be someone that needs some help at home have a chat with your parents to come up with some strategies for completing your homework.   Developing these strategies will support your learning as you move onto Intermediate next year.

Congratulations Mini & Meilaniah on your outstanding home learning effort this week !!!!

We have some fun activities happening over the next few weeks - so put these in your diary.

Great fundraiser and creative way to pass on some of your pre-loved toys etc.

Come along and support our Room 19 Maths Olympiad team on Thursday 17 August @ 11.15.

Farewell Mr Owens

Today was Mr Owens last day at school.  We played just a little trick on him ... he will never be upset about not receiving flowers ever again.  We had lots of fun showering him in lots of flowers !!!   We even had time for a farewell pizza and lamington party.

Good luck living back in England Mr Owens.  We will miss you.

Matariki @ the Museum

This week we visited the Auckland Museum with the other year 6 classes.   Our visit was part of our Celebrations Inquiry plan and we learnt about the meaning behind Mataraki.  After our lesson went away in our groups and completed the instagram treasure hunt in the Museum, it was lots of fun and a great way to see the displays in a short amount of time.  Here are some photos the day.

Waiting for our moko's
Still had a quick game of "Andy's coming !!!"

Courageous Kaea - Our Bike Rider Extraordinaire

This is Kaea. Kaea has very limited vision. Kaea attended our Pedal Power programme. Kaea loved learning to ride a bike and was so enthusiastic that he could despite his disability. Kaea gives everything a go and we wanted to break down any challenging barriers. Giving Kaea a bike sent him a message that he can do anything. Go Kaea#AKLPLAY

Recently Kaea received a re-cycled bike donated by Counties Manukau.  He has demonstrated outstanding resilience learning to ride his bike and has improved so much since he first started riding back in Term 1.

Here is a video of Kaea first learning to ride.

Last week our local newspaper the Eastern Courier came and interviewed Kaea and below is the link to the newspaper article.

We think Kaea is pretty smart ....

Brain Break Time ...

Here's a little fun animation of one of our brain break activities.

 Enjoy !!!!

We have added lots of different rules to keep us on our toes ...

Lockdown Practise

Please read the link below regarding our "Lockdown" Procedures @ Elm Park.  I was extremely proud of Room 19 when they were involved in our lockdown practise last week.

They were outstanding and took the practise very seriously, I was very proud of them.

Thanks Sienna for demonstrating the perfect position for us all at the end of the practise.

Drawing Club

We have a creative bunch of kids in room 19.

A couple of weeks ago Reuben came and asked me if he could start a "Drawing Club" during lunchtimes.  After having a chat with Mr Borcher and organising a time that wouldn't clash with other activities it was decided that "Drawing Club" was to take place on Monday lunchtimes.

What a huge success it  has been over the past 3 weeks with nearly 60 children from year 5 and 6 enjoying some quiet time drawing and being creative.

This week we watched the video,  how to draw a minion ... not everyone chose to draw this but it was lots of fun.

Thanks Reuben for organising our Drawing Club and to Phoenix for also helping and coming up with some great ideas.

Fraction Fun

Over the past few weeks we have learning about fractions.

  • identifying different fractions eg. improper fractions, unit fractions, proper fractions, mixed fractions
  • converting fractions eg. 24/7 is the same as 3 3/7
  • ordering and sequencing fractions eg. with the same denominator and different denominator
  • find fractions of sets
  • equivalent fractions eg. 3/4 is the same as 6/8
  • simplifying fractions eg. 10/18 simplified as 5/8
  • adding and subtractions fractions
Whew .... here are some fun websites that you can visit during the holidays if you come across a rainy day or two.

Here are some fractions games we have been playing and we are pretty amazing at counting forwards and backwards in halves, quarter, thirds, fifths and eighths.
